Hurricane Preparation

We all know the precautions we should take to protect our homes and families when a hurricane threatens; stock up on water and non-perishable food, get out the flashlights and weather radio, buy lots of batteries and bring in the lawn furniture.

But did you know that you could also take precautions to protect your HVAC system? Knowing how to protect your HVAC system before the storm and after can help minimize system damage, it will also keep you safe.

HVAC Preparation Before the Hurricane

  • Turn off the breakers to your AC, heat pump, indoor air handler or gas furnace.
  • Turn off gas supply to the gas furnace.
  • Protect outdoor equipment from flying debris.
  • DO NOT turn your system back on once the storm has passed if either the indoor/outdoor unit has flooded OR if your ductwork is under water. If either has happened, call Bud's. Even if the water has receded and the system appears operational; it will rust. Call your home insurance / flood insurance and make a claim
  • If you're in doubt about your system, call Bud's to check it first.

Additional Information

HVAC safety after the hurricane

If your HVAC system was exposed to flooding or experienced other types of damage during the storm, some of that equipment may need to be replaced. Some can be repaired, but your system will definitely need to be inspected by an expert. The Air-Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) recommends that you follow these important safety precautions once the storm has passed.

Ductwork

If your house contains a central forced-air system, attention should also be paid to the ductwork. Unfortunately, we're not able to salvage duct insulation that has been in contact with floodwater, but will replace it because it is impossible to decontaminate.

Warranty Service

All air conditioning manufacturers offer warranties on their equipment in varying amounts. Unfortunately, warranties do not cover equipment damaged by floods and catastrophic events. Insurance, on the other hand, covers damage from accidents or unpredictable circumstances such as hurricanes and floods.
